In Kingdoms At War, buying lands is necessary for building more buildings. The cost of land gets more and more expensive as you buy more and more.
In this game, you are allowed to own a maximum of 25 lands. The centre land is compulsory to be your castle. What buildings to build on the other 24 lands depends on your strategy or the build you want to have. For example, for a pure spy, they will eventually have 24 level 4 guilds and 1 castle. A pure attack build will have 24 level 3 subterranean factories (or clockwork demons)

1st: Free! It comes with a Castle which cannot be sold. (Part of tutorial)
2nd: 1 thousand - You must build a workshop/barracks/stables. (Part of Tutorial) It can be sold.
3rd: 1 thousand - You must build a Guild. (Part of Tutorial) It can be sold.
